Business Spotlight: Basha Donair & Shawarma
At Basha Donair & Shawarma, great food is only part of the experience. For owner and operator Darren Fulcher, creating a welcoming, family-oriented environment is just as important as what’s on the plate.
“Our business name is Basha Donair & Shawarma. People come to Basha because of the love for Lebanese Mediterranean cuisine,” Darren says. “I instantly meet them with kindness while providing a comfortable and safe environment for their dining experience.”
Located in the heart of Rutland, Basha has become a local favourite known for fresh ingredients, generous portions, and attentive customer service. Darren credits the restaurant’s loyal customer base to a simple philosophy: make every guest feel taken care of.
“Basha is a very family-oriented restaurant. The staff and I always make sure people are satisfied,” he explains. “Our willingness to assist customers and make sure their order is correctly suited for them keeps people coming back.”
A Journey of Adaptation and Growth
Like many restaurant owners, Darren’s journey has been shaped by constant change. From navigating the challenges of COVID-19 to managing supply shifts and rising food costs, running a restaurant has required flexibility and resilience.
“It has been a very challenging and ever-changing learning curve,” he says. “I’ve had to learn and adapt on the fly — learning new techniques and concepts to continuously stay ahead of the curve.”
Despite the challenges, Darren’s passion for Mediterranean cuisine continues to drive him forward.
“My love for donairs and Mediterranean food is what motivated me to start this business,” he says. “Being a hands-on owner gives me the ability to have personal daily interactions with customers, which is something I truly value.”
Quality Food, Made with Care
Basha Donair & Shawarma takes pride in serving wholesome meals made with care and attention to quality. Darren emphasizes fresh preparation and ingredient transparency as key parts of the restaurant’s identity.
“We focus on making wholesome, quality food — no chemicals, no preservatives, no MSG — and we use organic vegetables sourced locally whenever possible,” he says. “The biggest reward is seeing people leave Basha satisfied.”
Proud to Be Part of Rutland
For Darren, Rutland’s diversity and accessibility make it an ideal place to operate a business. Its central location and strong sense of community continue to bring both residents and visitors through Basha’s doors.
“Rutland’s location is awesome — close to Highway 97, the airport, the university, and the route to Big White,” he says. “What makes Rutland special is the many diverse nationalities within the area. Being part of that and creating food that meets everyone’s needs is something I’m proud of.”
Darren also values the support and connection that comes from being part of the Uptown Rutland Business Association.
“Being part of URBA has been an awesome experience for Basha,” he says. “It’s great to be heard and have a voice. Events like the Grub Crawl were a huge success, and I look forward to supporting future ideas that benefit Rutland businesses.”
Now Featuring: Family & Event Platters
Basha is currently promoting a family or event platter designed to feed approximately five people. The platter includes traditional Lebanese chicken shawarma, Mediterranean rice, fattoush salad, hummus, garlic sauce, fresh pita bread, and a generous serving of baklava — perfect for gatherings, celebrations, or sharing with friends and family.
Making a Difference Every Day
While the restaurant industry can be demanding, Darren says the daily human connections make it all worthwhile.
“As challenging as the restaurant industry is, I still get up every day ready to work alongside my long-time employees who I call family,” he says. “Knowing that a smile, kindness, a listening ear, or even a small gesture can make a difference in someone’s day is the most magical moment for me.”
